Our Team Story

We've joined the fight to end Alzheimer’s! On June 5th, our local real estate community is participating in a one-of-a-kind event called the Real Estate Rumble. This event is designed to promote fun, team building, and camaraderie for our local real estate industry through an exciting competition of field games for ten participating brokerages to sort out who will be the all-time winner, earning the title of Rumble Champion 2024!

Attached to this event is an emotional and heartfelt mission. We want to make a significant impact on our local community by fundraising to support the good work of the Alzheimer’s Association. By supporting this mission, you are helping to keep education and programs free for those living with the diagnosis and the caregivers supporting them.

Each one of our teams is honoring a loved one who’s been affected.

Engel & Völkers' efforts in all of this are in honor of Teresa Madden, the mother of our friend and colleague, Sharon Nolan. Her battle with this disease was long and involved many different phases. Her family witnessed her go from a vivacious, active woman who lit up a room to the speechless, sedentary person she became. It was heartbreaking. Sharon will always try to see the silver lining in any situation, and the strong bond formed between Sharon and her siblings was it.

Teresa was the mother of eight, grandmother to twenty-one, and great-grandmother of twenty-three. Teresa met her husband at Catholic University, where he wrote a musical and she was cast as a dancer in the production. They were married for 68 years, traveling the world together and spending summers at their home in Bethany Beach. Teresa was a great athlete. Daily tennis and golf games were part of her routine. She had a wicked sense of humor and a fun personality, and their home was always filled with relatives and a large group of friends. Cocktail parties around the piano, filled with laughter, were a normal occurrence.

When she first got sick, it was hard for Dad to accept the new normal. At first, he acted as a gatekeeper, protecting Teresa so no one would notice her decline. Once her dementia had progressed, he moved to a facility with her. She went through several different phases, from forgetful to agitated to a great escape artist. As the last of the eight kids, she forgot Sharon first, which was hard. Eventually, all were forgotten, including her husband. It was a very long goodbye, which is best described as bittersweet. Before the disease, she lived her life with faith, a compliment for everyone, and a zest for each day. To Sharon, that is a great inspiration.

Many of our family members, friends, clients, and neighbors have either lost their battle or are still struggling through it. The Alzheimer’s Association gives them a way to have a better quality of life through support groups, a 24/7/365 hotline, and spearheading promising research that may one day lead to being able to put an end to the suffering. Will you join the fight with a donation today?

Your donation means so much, to me and all those affected by the disease. On behalf of more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and over 11 million caregivers — thank you.
