My Story
Ten years have passed since we lost my Yiayia (Greek for grandmother), and in those years my life has changed tremendously. My family & I moved from Massachusetts to Knoxville, TN. We love living here in Knoxville but miss our extended family.
I worked for the Alzheimer's Association as an office & volunteer coordinator until covid caused the loss of my position and many others. I'm still volunteering to help this great cause end this awful disease and all types of dementia. I have seen how devasting this disease can be. My yiayia had dementia. We watched her struggle & fade away for 10 years with this horrible disease before she passed in 2012.
My cousin's Great Aunt Marci, whom I had close ties to, had Alzheimer's. It was hard to have her cry out in terror and back away from me when I visited, having not seen them for a while. She had no idea who I was and it scared me, having never experienced this before. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease that robs people of their memories, etc...
We all have a reason to End Alzheimer's!
Today, an estimated 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, including more than 5 million Americans. In the United States alone, 16 million friends & family members are providing their care. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.
