My Story
Thank you for visiting my page. By sharing my story, it is my hope that you will join us in fighting to find a cure for this memory-stealing disease. That our children will be able to live in a world without Alzheimer's and other dementia. We are fighting for the first survivor.
My mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. It was such a struggle to get a diagnosis. My father had recently passed and the doctors said her symptoms were depression and grief. She had Chiari malformation and surgery to remedy that in 2003, could that be what was causing it? My sister and I took Mom to several (and by that I mean a lot of) specialists, driving to UVA, MRI's, memory tests, the full gamut. Finally, a neurologist at VCU diagnosed her with early-onset Alzheimer's, formally referred to as Benson's syndrome. Her difficulties started with her vision, depth perception, and the classic forgetting. It progressed to not remember people, places, or names of items. She moved to memory care at Sunrise Assisted Living in Richmond, VA. After suffering with this terrible disease for many years, she finally succumbed in June 2018. She will always be my reason to strive for a cure.
The Longest Day is the day of the year with the most light — the summer solstice. And it's the day I have committed to fight Alzheimer's disease! I’m participating in The Longest Day, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Today, an estimated 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, including more than 5 million Americans. In the United States alone, 16 million friends and family members are providing their care. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.
Stand up to the darkness of Alzheimer’s and make a donation today to help the Alzheimer's Association support all those facing the disease. Thank you!
