Our Team Story

David "Debo" Ehle lost his battle with Alzheimer's Disease on December 7, 2018. He was 77 years of age, dearly loved and respected as a kind and generous man. He was a dedicated and devoted duplicate bridge player and teacher. At the time of his death, he had achieved the ACBL rank of Diamond Life Master and had earned over 5,000 Masterpoints.

Debo's wife and caregiver, Linda Westerfield, is also an avid duplicate bridge player and an accredited ACBL Bridge Instructor. We asked Linda to relate to us what it was like being a caregiver for someone with Alzheimer's.  We so appreciate Linda writing her sentiments to share with us.

"During the last three years of Debo's life, I learned firsthand much more about Alzheimer's than I ever wanted to know.First was the denial by his family and a brushing off of forgetfulness as just a normal sign of aging. Then, the resignation that indeed getting lost a mile from his own home; trying to use the car radio as a mobile phone; and "meeting" for the first time people he had known for years, were sure signs of this hideous disease. As odd as it may sound, I look at his Alzheimer's as a mixed curse and blessing. He would forget weeks of hospitalizations, amputations, bouts with Staph and Strep infections, MRSA, doctor's visits, and so on, but I was fortunate in that he never forgot who I was and that we dearly loved each other."

"To the very end, he could play a fierce game of bridge, and I truly do believe that bridge held the progression of the disease to a crawl. His physician, Dr. Chuck Edwards with the Memory Center of Charlotte, encouraged his playing bridge for both his brain and the social aspects.I was so very lucky to have this "larger than life" man as my loving husband. I'll always be grateful for the time we had together."

From one of our teammates, Susan Wade:  “One of the highlights of my life was having the opportunity to play with Debo in our Longest Day fundraiser for Alzheimer's bridge event year before last. He never mentioned there was anything wrong with him. He may not have remembered where he had dinner the night before or what he had to eat for breakfast before he came to the Club, but he played bridge as sharply as any Diamond Life Master could. It is a memory I will always cherish.”

So please join me in showing your love in memory of Debo Ehle and in honor of his wife and caregiver, Linda Westerfield. Or, please honor someone you know who suffers from one of the many forms of dementia by participating in The Longest Day of Bridge at the Charlotte Bridge Association, 510 East Park Ave in Charlotte on Wednesday, June 19th, 2019.

Our goals are to raise the awareness of all types of dementia and Alzheimer's disease and to raise funds to help advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.

100% of proceeds from The Longest Day as well as other donations will go to the Alzheimer's Association.
