is fundraising to honor:
my Grandma and Aunt Adele
There are a few things that have become clear to me as I have grown up: being yourself, working towards goals, and sharing those moments with those you love and who love you is important because at some point those things could be taken from you. That is the case with my grandmother and aunt which is why as I work towards my goal of running the five boroughs starting with Manhattan and the NYC half marathon, I also want to help raise money and awareness for the disease that has slowly but surely taken these amazing women from those who love them.
Over the past few years, I have seen what research and pro activity can do to give time back to individuals and their loved ones. I have also witnessed and experienced the heartache of seeing my loved one disappear before my eyes. That's why it is important to me to help an organization whose goal is to further research into preventive and reactionary ways of warding off this awful disease.
I know that if they could, my grandmother and aunt would be cheering me on in going for my goals. My grandmother in her caring, supportive, and loving way (the way only a grandmother could) would tell me that I am capable of anything as long as I work towards it. My Aunt Adele with her intoxicating energy would likely make a few jokes or a silly race sign to make me laugh to relieve the pressure to help me accomplish my goals.
I will run this race to honor them and I hope you can help to support the research and work of the Alzheimer's Association to help other families like mine who fear losing more of who their loved ones are everyday.
Below are some interesting statistics from the Alzheimer's Association.
Today, an estimated 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, including more than 5 million Americans. In the United States alone, 16 million friends and family members are providing their care. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for any help you can provide.
