It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing into heaven of our beloved Abuelita Zoila on November 22nd, 2021.

Zoila Esther Baguer (née Varona) was born in Gibara, Cuba on October 20, 1925, the daughter of Raul Varona and Magdalena Gonzalez, and the third youngest of 12 siblings. After completing the Escuela Superior (High School) in Gibara, she matriculated at the Escuela Normal (Teachers College) in Santiago de Cuba and went on to become a high school teacher in Holguin, Cuba.

On June 21, 1952, she married the love of her life, Julio L. Baguer, in Holguin, Cuba. In 1956, their only son, Julio César, was born. In 1969, the family emigrated to the United States in order to escape Communism and settled in New Jersey. In 1976, Mr. Baguer passed unexpectedly, leaving an unfillable hole in the heart of the Baguer family.

In spite of many challenging times, Zoila remained ever positive - her ineffable wit and signature smile matched only by her sharp intellect and strength of character. She gave of herself wholly and was always there for others, especially her beloved grandchildren, "Nicolita" & "Key," as she called them. She was thrilled to pass on her legendary recipes for Arroz con Pollo (chicken & rice) and Natilla (vanilla pudding) to her beloved daughter-in-law Maria.

Mrs. Baguer is survived by her son Julio C. Baguer and his wife Maria Baguer of NJ and her two grandchildren, Nicole Baguer of NY and Keith Baguer of NJ.

At the family's request, services for Mrs. Baguer will be private.
