Both Kevin and I have a parent that is affected by this disease, we are fortunate to report that while there are challenges and even frustrations we are blessed that both of our family members are "stuck in a happy place"!

Tom (Kevin's dad) will recall the days of old and even as he retells the stories, manages to laugh at the same exact place in the story telling... every single time! He may not remember everyone's name but he will call you "babe" and ask you: "how are you doing?" or "how is work going?" Which usually affords him the opportunity to reminisce on his working days and the work ethic that he is still proud of to this day.

Beverly, (Denise's) sweet mom, is in a nursing home and is just a delight to the staff. She likes to be the last to be put to bed at night and is completely content as long as she has her word search puzzle and most recently her coloring books again. She stays in the lines and chooses beautiful, realistic colors for every picture. She may not be able to tell you what she ate for lunch or dinner but ask her about the "good old day's" and she is as sharp as a tact. Her sense of humor is very much alive and she will take a jab every chance she can. I have found that I can consult her with my concerns or worries. It is then that she reminds me, that she has NEVER worried a day in her life. At the age of 93 I 'am beginning to believe she has found the secret to a good long life.
I am not insensitive to the sadness and hurt that comes from both of these debilitating disease's but for now I am celebrating that, the form and stage in which our loved ones are affected is much easier then what many other families are dealing with.
Standing in the gap with prayer and awareness by supporting the Alzheimer's walk in our community is just one easy way to do my part for both Mom and Tom!
