Obituary for Joseph Robert Ciaramella December 26, 1935 February 8, 2020

Joseph (Joe) Robert Ciaramella was born in the Bronx, New York City, on December 26, 1935 to two second generation working class Italian parents, John and Adele Ciaramella, and was an only child.

He attended schools in both the Bronx and later in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering. Joe served in the Army Reserves for 10 years, and was deployed for a stint of 1 ½ years to explore the possibilities of the US handling of The Berlin Wall.

His path of engineering led him to eventually open his own business, Ciara Corporation, which was in existence for many years and was headquartered in Van Nuys, CA. Joe worked on projects in over 47 buildings in the Los Angeles area and was well respected in his field.

Later in life, he became a developer and built two hotels in the Seatac area of Seattle, as well as the family home in Mandeville Canyon. He loved design and had a great deal of creativity that came through in his projects.

Joe was active in The Wilshire Country Club, Brentwood Presbyterian Church, The Jonathan Club, and Big Sisters of LA. He very much enjoyed golf, and his “Golfers for God” group!

Joe passed from this life to more life on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the California Veterans’ Home of Los Angeles at the age of 84.

Joe is survived by his wife of 34 years, Laura Johnson Ciaramella, and their son, Jonathan Clay Ciaramella, both of Los Angeles; and his daughter, Staci Ciaramella (Glenn) Kagan, and two grandchildren, Alexander and Nicholas, also of Los Angeles. His older daughter, Joni Ciaramella, is deceased.

Personal Comments (Laura J Ciaramella):

Joe lived a big life....and when he was diagnosed with AD he began the long journey home, becoming smaller with each passing day. The personal impact this had on all who loved him was/is profound. After many years of being Joe's principal caregiver, and my mother before him, I can relate to the patient and caregiver's daily fatigue, stress, range of emotions, grief and trauma.

I know that many of you may be caring for someone who has AD, an experience that is compounded by Covid19. If there is to be a silver lining to the pandemic, let it be that we become more attuned to the needs and challenges that a suffering person experiences.

The Alzheimer's Association will leave no stone unturned to find the cure for this disease. Please join me in supporting this organization, by remembering Joe in a way that will help provide meaningful research and early detection. Our collective resources have the ability to bring about healing and cohesion.

For now, Alzheimer's Disease is the victor.
Our challenge is to conquer it.
