Mari Jane (MJ) Gray was born June 24, 1935 and passed away October 1, 2019. Born in Detroit MI, she lived most of her adult life in Manhattan Beach CA, where she enjoyed daily long strolls at the beach, and spending time with family and friends. She spent her final years in Atlanta GA.
It is hard to decide what to share for this tribute, as MJ was a private person, but hers is one of many familiar yet untold stories about the toll of dementia. The early signs were subtle, such as her forgetting a birthday. And then came the difficulty with balancing her checking account, and being easily confused with any type of problem solving conversation. With the support and love of friends and family, she was able to live independently in Manhattan Beach for a number of years.
Relocating her to an assisted living facility with a memory unit was a very difficult decision, and challenging to execute, but for MJ was the right thing to do.
MJ never lost her ability to recognize those she knew and loved. She never lost her ability to smile. And while she did lose her ability to speak with words, her eyes and facial expressions were able to convey a lot. And while she hated being "handled" (bathed, dressed, or moved at all) she became a much more affectionate woman - hugging, kissing and holding hands in ways she hadn't before her dementia.
We appreciate any donations made in MJ's honor. And to all the caregivers who work in memory units, you truly are angels on earth. Please know your acceptance of MJ as a whole person, with a past, present and future - and your treating her with dignity and respect will be forever appreciated.
MJ is survived by her sister Judy and brother James, her daughters Carol and Cate her sons Chris and Casey and her daughter in law Judy as well as 11 beloved grandchildren and one great grandson.
