I Love You A Bushel And A Peck And A Hug Around The Neck

I am one of the sons of Elaine. She recently passed away after living with the horrible disease of Alzheimer's for seven years. The worst part of this disease is the robbing the person of who they are. A person is largely defined by the interactions we have with family and friends. When Alzheimer's robs a person of the memories of who they are by the loss of recognition family and friends it is one of the most heart breaking feelings that care givers experience.

Elaine did succumb to ravages of memory loss but never lost her gentle spirit. She was always glad to see visitors although she did not know who they were. One thing she never forgot is to tell a visitor or family upon leaving was "I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck".

Mom, you are finally free of this horrible disease and I have one wish for you. I LOVE YOU A BUSHEL AND A PECK AND TWO HUGS AROUND THE NECK.

My memories of Grandma will forever be imprinted on my heart. Thinking back to our Christmas mornings, Thanksgiving dinners, dressing up in her jewelry when I was a little girl, her teaching me how to sew and knit, watching her cook and bake with ease, playing yard games with Tinker in the back yard - all these moments I will cherish forever. She was the epitome of a perfect grandma; always spoiling Jess and I, always caring for us, and always treating us like princesses.
When I think of Grandma, one of the first things that come to mind is how she always used to say "I love you a bushel, a peck, and a hug around the neck." And the best part of this is I knew she meant it. I will also always remember her softness, her smile, her laughter, and her selflessness. She was a woman of strength, wisdom, and love. I am proud to say that she was my grandma!
So even though I miss her dearly, I know she's basking in the Lord's Glory with Grandpa and Mom now! And one day we will all be together!
But until then, I miss you Grandma, and "I love you a bushel, a peck, and a hug around the neck."

Our memories of Grandma are ones filled with a gentle and loving kindness, sprinkled with a classic toughness that came in the form of determination and strength. I will never forget the many hours we spent doing puzzles together, or the gobs of jewelry she had so that Jen and I could play dress up, or the many holidays we spent laughing and eating and playing together, or the hours she spent creating masterpieces with her sewing and knitting and cross-stiching. She was truly a woman of character and generosity, and the legacy she has left will live long past her well-lived days on this Earth.
We love you, Grandma - a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck - and will miss you until we shall surely meet again!

It's very sad knowing that we won't see Aunt Elaine again, but the last time we saw her (in Scottsbluff 4 or 5 years ago) she was still her old self - full of warmth and happiness as always. We're glad that this is how we'll remember her.

Ted, Jim, and families: We were so sorry to hear about Aunt Elaine. I'll always remember her gentle good humor, her great laugh, and how much fun we had when the families would get together when we were kids. I'm sorry we can't make it to the funeral, but please know that we're thinking of you, Aunt Elaine, and the entire family. Best wishes always,
The Ehrmans (from Lincoln)
