My mother defined herself by being a "mom" She was a great mom. She was always there and did all the traditional things, although not always in a traditional way. As Alzheimers started to take over she protected us from it and tried to take care of it herself. Even without diagnosis she knew what was probably happening. It had happened to her mother but at a much younger age. It eventually destroyed her because she lost her independence. Her independence didnt include doing a lot of things or travelling a lot but it included her helping her friends and doing what she wanted when she wanted whatever that was - even if it was nothing. But most of all losing her command of the language was probably the toughest All she wanted was to be able to do things as she always had and it was heartbreaking to watch that process. She was loved by her children and grandchildren and we each did all we could to have her time be as meaningful and pleasant as possible. She is missed and will continue to be missed. No one should have to suffer from this disease.
