Mother of three, grandmother of six and great grandmother of sixteen, Mildred Gabriel is an inspiration to her family and friends. As the 93 year old matriarch of our Italian family "Grandma Great" has left her mark on all of us. I still see her dancing the Charleston at her 80th birthday celebration 13 years ago. Six years later she disappeared in the tangled arms of dementia and Alzheimer's. The sparkle in her eyes has faded, her speech has become a foreign language and I hold back tears when I hug her frail body. But she is healthy and has wonderful caregivers at "Marquis
Care". We visit Sundays and join her for service; amazed when she sings "The Lord's Prayer"...the words and melody nearly perfect. I pray each day she leaves us peacefully, and that research will find a cure for this cruel disease. When I feel overwhelmed I hold on to Grandma Great's comical words of wisdom: "Remember, if you don't have problems, you're dead".
