My father lived with dementia for the last 10 or so years of his life. The last 6-7 years showed the steady decline of a vibrant mind. After my brother passed in 2020, it was apparent that it was not safe for my dad to live alone in NY anymore. My dad and I worked together to visit and select a Continuum of Care community up in Massachusetts near my family. He selected the facility/community that "felt right" and lived in Independent Living for 2+ years and then moved to the Assisted Living/Memory Care for the last 2 years of his life. We LOVED having my dad close by so we could go visit him as much as possible. While my dad's short-term memory was gone, he never got to the point where he did not know who we all were. I am forever grateful for that, as going deeper down that Dementia/Alzheimer's hole is a very difficult thing, as I witnessed with his mother. Please consider contributing to the fight against this debilitating disease that affects so many families around the world.
