Joyce B. Cromartie was born in Ashville, North Carolina, June 7, 1937. Her parents were Joe and Dorothy Bell; she was one of three and raised by her grandparents Walter and Bula Mims. Joyce attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida in 1954 through 1957. While attending FAMU she met and married the love of her life/college sweetheart, Eugene R. Cromartie. She is survived by four sons whom all served the community in various careers (Geno, LEo, Marco, and Eliseo).

On August 31, 2023, not only our family, but several families suffered the loss of our tribe leader, our matriarch, Joyce Cromartie, a woman still revered by many as and still proudly call MOM. As we grew up our home was open to everyone, she was everyone's guiding light. Though you are in heaven, we thank you for always loving us and guiding us. And though you are no longer here with us we can still feel your love.

Everyone called her mom. She held a special place as the matriarch and mentor to many. She was and still is the guiding force, the pillar of strength, and the nurturer who held many lives together. As the matriarch, she played a critical role in shaping the values, beliefs, and traditions of her four sons and many others. She believed in selfless services and giving to others as she displayed over the many years of giving and contributing to others and several organizations.
