Our father was an incredibly smart man who was an avid reader and worked as a teacher and school administrator for almost 30 years before retiring. Unfortunately Alzheimer's knows no boundaries and in his later years he was stricken with this horrible disease. For several years he compensated for the progressive loss of his memory and with help from his wife he was able to maintain a fairly normal life. Physically he was incredibly healthy, but his memory worsened over time. As the disease progressed he needed to be placed in a memory care facility. Despite being in memory care during the last year of his life, he looked for ways to stay productive. He realized many residents were worse off than him both physically and mentally. When we would visit he was always lending a hand to others. The staff said my father was an incredible support to others. He was always appreciative of the workers. Despite his frustration of losing his memory, he looked for ways to help others who had progressed much further than him. Workers commented that he was invaluable to the other residents and to them. He felt needed and useful during his time in memory care and was making a difference up until he passed.
