By participating in this event, I've committed to raising awareness and funds to advance the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association®.
If you know me you know that I enjoy the outdoors no matter the season, weather, or time of day. If you've been out climbing, skiing, paddling, biking, or simply adventuring with me then you know that a good time likely involves some hard work and type II fun in adverse conditions. And the bigger the challenge the more excited I get. What you may not know is that I have family members who live with this terrible disease. My Grandmother, Carol, has been living with Alzheimer's for many years now and, thankfully, is able to be in a care facility after losing my grandfather and her life partner of 65+ years to cancer a few years ago. She's in her mid-90's and is one tough cookie, having lived through some crazy times in our history; Polio, World War II, the Vietnam War, now Covid!
So I've set a goal and decided to take the challenge in raising funds toward finding a cure for Alzheimer's.
With most of 2020 and now 2021 being such a wild ride of a year, the in-person component of this event has been cancelled. The event was scheduled for Feb. 27th. I'm looking to complete my challenge by mid-March. While this cancellation is unfortunate but understandable, I see this as an opportunity to take it a step further, going beyond the typical ski route around Camels Hump. Expect me to complete the challenge but I'll be upping the ante for myself and incorporating a few other sports into the mix. I haven't determined exactly what it'll be yet (open to ideas and collaboration), but I'm concocting more of a human-powered approach across multiple disciplines to complete this challenge, and starting from my doorway in Moretown, VT. *Think fat-bike, skiing, pack-rafting, climbing, and if I had a hang-glider... well that would be pretty rad :)
Initially I'm looking to raise $250 toward my efforts and will be sharing my challenge across my social media platforms and a thorough follow-up trip report, post-challenge. If I reach my initial goal, I may decide to raise it.
** As of February 23rd we've raised 488% of my initial goal and I've reset my goal to $1.500!
Please support my efforts by making a donation, if you can, but support comes in many forms. You could also share my efforts on your own social media channels or through word of mouth to help spread the word. I'll also need to keep my energy up to accomplish this task too, so snacks and coffee would be a treat if this may be a means in which you can assist :)
All funds raised benefit the Alzheimer's Association and its work to enhance care and support programs and advance research toward methods of treatment, prevention and, ultimately, a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Thank you for joining the fight against Alzheimer’s!
