Support our team for the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®, the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
We walk in memory or Sara Digby Perrine. Despite, or perhaps because of the full life she led, she suffered many illnesses. The last one to finally defeat her was Alzheimer's.
Sally was a bright, caring, creative, strong and artistic woman who gave her life to caring for her family and community. She was an excellent cook, housekeeper, seamstress, tutor, activity director, wife, mother, community contributor and so much more. Perhaps I should reverse the order of that except she would have thought all of those were equally important. She truly loved our family. She decorated the house in a beautiful New England style, loved antiques, and had seasonal and holiday decorations to rival none, a lot of which she made as we were far from wealthy and she so creative. Our Christmas trees and house decorations were best of all. She was a very style conscious woman and always saw that her family always dressed well when we went out in public. She sewed a lot and could look at a dress in a store window and between her and her mother they could cut a pattern out of newspaper and sew the same dress.
Her talents were held back by the time she lived in but she managed as full a life as women were permitted at the time. She was born in 1914 at the beginning of World War I, was just 6 when women first got the right to vote in 1920, lived through the Great Depression of the 30's was married at the beginning of World War II and watched her new husband get drafted and sent off to Iceland. She had her first baby in 1943 while her husband was still overseas. She raised 2 children in the war and post war era, the somewhat quiet 50's, then, bless her heart the 60's. She still kept her children out of trouble (at least not bad trouble), through childhood, teenage years, advanced education, married off and employed. Whew. Alzheimer's disease cruelly took down one from the Great Generation.
