In 2012 my dad, Billy Ray Nipper was diagnosis with Dementia. Being my dad's caregiver, I learned a lot about Alzheimer's/Dementia. I had witness how this "horrible disease" could take a normal, good, and godly man and change his dementor instantly. Well at 4:09 a.m., on Friday, September 4, 2015, my dad lost his battle with Dementia, two and a half years after being diagnosis. Right after my dad's death, my wife Karla and I immediiately got involved with the "Walk To End Alzheimer's". Then on September 17, 2016, a year and thirteen days after my dad's death my uncle, Robert Frank Martin (my mom's brother) was diagnosis with Dementia. I could not imagine this "horrible disease" would strike our family again. At that moment, I decided I wanted to do more than the ""Walk To End Alzheimer's," so I became an Advocate for the Alzheimer's Association here in Tennessee. Well Robert lost his battle with Dementia at 1:32 a.m., on Thursday, September 13, 2018, less that two years after being diagnosised. At Robert's funeral, before the casket was closed I went up to Robert's casket kissed him on the fore head. Then I placed my hand on his shoulder, and I made a promise to Robert, I promised Robert for the rest of my life, I would help to fight this horrible disease known as Alzheimer's/Dementia until a cure is found.

Karla and I started our own "Walk To End Alzheimer's" team, and we named the team "Team Martin & Nipper."

"Team Martin & Nipper" was formed in the Honor of my Dad and Robert. My dad and Robert were both honest, godly men. My dad was an Elder at his church and Robert was a Sunday School Teacher at his church. My and Robert delivered news papers for the Daily News Journal together. They both had a sense of humor. They were brother-in-laws. However, my dad was a University of Tennessee football and basketball fan, and Robert was a University of Alabama football fan and University of Kentucky basketball fan.

Being caregiver for someone with Alzheimer's/Dementia, especially a close family member, you have a front row seat to this disease. And being caregiver for both my dad and Robert, I saw Dementia act quickly and act slowly to take the lives of my dad and Robert. The only difference between the two, Robert lived less than two years after being diagnosis and my dad lived two and a half years after being diagnosis with Dementia.
