I walk for my mom. I walk for me. I walk for anyone who has been a Caregiver. Who will be a Caregiver. I walk to educate EVERYONE.
I have seen interaction between children and parents (or between spouses) with dementia that makes me angry/sad. Makes me want to cry because the children are so uneducated about what is happening to their parents or spouses. No patience. No understanding.
Children stick their parents in a nursing home. They don't know what medicines they are on. They don't know what they fall down. They don't even know the name of their doctors. They don't know how to re-direct their parent/spouses when they become upset.
I am high-risk for Vascular Dementia. My grandmother had it. My mother had it. They both died from strokes. I have high BP. High cholesterol. Diabetes. I'm am grateful that my doctors take my risk seriously. I don't say lucky because I take steps to ensure that they take me seriously.
Educate yourself. Educate your family. Protect yourself. Help yourself. Help me.
