National Capital Area Chapter State Policy

DC Dementia Services Coordinator

The Mayor’s budget includes $100,000 for a dementia assessment for the District and a contracted Dementia Services Coordinator for Fiscal Year 2020. We thank the Mayor Bowser for making dementia a priority. Persons with dementia need our help today and we need to be there for them as their needs change, so join us and tell the council to make this position a permanent part of DC government.
Purpose: To improve coordination among agencies in the care and support of individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Description
Dementia Services Coordinator is a permanent position within the Department of Health. The position shall:
  • coordinate dementia services within the District of Columbia;
  • coordinate implementation and updates of the Alzheimer’s State Plan;
  • assess and analyze dementia related data collected by the District of Columbia;
  • evaluate District of Columbia-funded dementia services; and
  • conduct other duties as assigned.

DC Council Testimony

On April 9, 2019 Dean Brenner testified before the DC Council Committee on Health Budget Oversight on the DC Department of Health, urging the creation and funding of a Dementia Services Coordinator and training for care providers. Read the testimony here.
