Lack of sleep in Hispanics may increase Alzheimer’s risk
New research suggests that Hispanics who don’t get enough sleep may be at an increased risk of memory problems and possibly Alzheimer’s. While additional research is needed, scientists said the findings are important because Hispanics already have a higher risk of Alzheimer’s compared to non-Hispanic whites, and Hispanics with sleep issues may benefit from early intervention.

Researcher focuses on enrolling Latinos in clinical trials
Assistant Harvard Medical School professor and researcher Yakeel Quiroz, Ph.D., frequently travels to her native Colombia to study a large family that carries a genetic mutation associated with younger-onset Alzheimer's. Dr. Quiroz believes the Hispanic/Latino community can accelerate Alzheimer’s and dementia research.

Incontinence is common in people living with Alzheimer’s
Many people in the later stages of living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia will experience incontinence (a loss of bladder or bowel control). While incontinence often causes feelings of embarrassment, how a caregiver responds can help the person retain a sense of dignity.
