Debate, discussion are key to scientific progress
Alzheimer’s and other dementia research is experiencing a renaissance, with exponential growth, as seen at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® 2022 (AAIC®) held in San Diego this week. On our blog, Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association chief science officer, talks about the critical importance of scientific integrity, debate and discussion, as well as her view that dementia research is the ultimate team sport.

Experiences of racism associated with cognitive decline
Study results presented at AAIC suggested that facing structural, interpersonal and institutional racism is associated with lower memory scores and worse cognition in midlife and old age, especially among Black individuals. Researchers said structural racism that affects brain health includes lower income, lower-quality early life education, and less access to healthy food and proper health care.

High blood pressure during pregnancy may increase dementia risk
Research reported at AAIC showed that high blood pressure disorders during pregnancy, such as hypertension and preeclampsia, may increase the risk of vascular dementia and accelerated brain aging. Among the findings, scientists said that women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy were more likely to develop vascular dementia compared to women with non-hypertensive pregnancies.
