Turnip, Everlasting Book by Turner Stimpson Turnip, Everlasting
Turnip, Everlasting is the second book that Turner Simpson has authored. Turner continues to touch lives by reaching beyond the fear of Alzheimer's and spreading his message of joy and hope. In Turnip Everlasting, Turnip illuminates for us the signficance of connection in our lives. As we connect with who we are and as we communicate that knowledge of self to others, we allow others to connect with our unique God-given selves. In the face of dementia, these connections become the basis of our loved ones' and our caregivers' abilities to "re-member" us to themselves, to ourselves, and to a place in the world around us when we are no longer able to do so for ourselves.
Turner takes us on a journey by inviting us (through his assuming the persona of one in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease) to connect with his personal story and the stories of those he loves and serves. In doing so, he communicates his understanding of The Turnip Approach and offers key values in the implementation of the approach. The "want to" desire that eliminates the grudge holding drudgery mentality of caregiving; the "keep it simple, be consistent, and show love" theme; and the focus on the person with dementia rather than on the caregiver or disease process are the values that undergird and embody The Turnp Approach.
