KeynoteResearch: Information on Alzheimer’s Prevention Trials, Keith Fargo, PhD

Description:   There are now 5 major clinical trials, either ongoing or launching soon, aimed at preventing dementia in those at highest risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease. This presentation will review the recent scientific advances that have made this possible, along with describing each of the prevention trials.

Description:  Comprehensive treatments including Lifestyle changes and recommendations

Breakout 1B:  Person-Centered Communication in DementiaGloria Miele, PhD 

Description:  Positive, supportive communication is essential to ensure quality care for people living with dementia. Caregivers, health care providers and family members can all benefit from learning and practicing person-centered communication. This session will present how to incorporate a more positive, person-centered communication approach to support patients with dementia.

Behaviors:  What are the different behaviors for the most common dementias (Alzheimer's Vascular, Frontotemporal, Lewy Bodies)Leslie Evertson, GNP

Description:  When you think of a person with dementia, you might expect them to be confused and forgetful.  however, they may also have hallucinations, paranoia, disinhibition and compulsive behaviors. Many common dementia can present differently.  This course will provide an overview of the more common behaviors in Alzheimer's Vascular, Frontotemporal and Lewy Body Dementia.

Breakout 2B:  End-of-life Issues and Palliative Care in Dementia and Cognitive Decline, Lanyard Dial, MD

Description: Dementia is a terminal disease and dying should be discussed and planned to insure that personal wishes are respected.  We will discuss the medical care of patients with dementing disease and the roles of palliative care and hospice.

Keynote: Alzheimer's Research: 2016 and Beyond,James Sutton, MD

Description:   Dr. Sutton will present recent advances in Alzheimer’s disease research, with an emphasis on new diagnostic tests and investigational drugs. Topics covered will include the science of Alzheimer’s disease, the IDEAS imaging study, the latest results from the aducanumab and solanezumab clinical trials, BACE inhibitors, and advances in tau imaging.

We welcome professionals in the field of dementia care, including those licensed as HHA, CNA, LVN, RN, LCSW, LMFT, and RCFE. Six Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered for professional attendees. 

The Alzheimer’s Association is an approved vendor for providing continuing education. This course meets the qualifications for 6 CE units/ hours for the following certified
license entities:

  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Assistant (HHA): Approved by the California Department of Health Services (Provider #06329).
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT): Approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider #1121).
  • Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN): Approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider #CEP12415).
  • Residential Care Facility for the Elderly Administrator (RCFE): Approved by the California Department of Social Services (Provider #2000072- 740-2).
