Women Conquer ALZ

Women are at the epicenter of the Alzheimer’s crisis. Not only are they more likely than men to be caregivers, women are also more likely to develop the disease. About 13 million American women are either living with Alzheimer’s or caring for someone who has it. In September, leading into National Women's Health & Fitness Day, the Alzheimer's Association Desert Southwest Chapter will host a statewide event to shine a light on how Alzheimer's disease and dementia effect women.
Our Women Conquer ALZ event will feature keynote speaker Jennie Gubner for her project, Serenatas For Tucson: A House-Calls Music Program for Latino Older Adults. Jennie Gubner is a socially engaged scholar, violinist, and visual ethnographer with a PhD from the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology. She works as an Assistant Professor of Music and Chair of a Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Intercultural Arts Research at the University of Arizona. Her research interests include Latin American popular music with a focus on intergenerational tango music scenes in Buenos Aires, creative and applied approaches to the study of music and dementia and aging, and ethnomusicological filmmaking. Jennie received funding for her project from a partnership between the Alzheimer’s Association, Global Brain Health Institute, and the UK-based Alzheimer’s Society to address global challenges in dementia, including access to care, stigma, brain health risk factors, and other key issues.
