Betty contracted Alzheimer's a few years ago and passed away the evening of July 28, 2013. Her family was her greatest achievement. Betty was extremely proud of her children, as everyone (including the mailman and the local grocery clerks) knew. She shared an an incredible 50 year love story with her husband during her life that will continue forever.

Betty Faye Collier Bumgarner, 71, wife of James Bumgarner died on July 28, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Viola Collier and graduated valedictorian in 1959 from Wolfe County High School. While living in Fairfax, VA she worked for George Mason University and volunteered as an official for both the Northern Virginia Swim League and area gymnastics. In addition to her husband of 50 years, she is survived by her children, Tiffany, Jill, and Brian; and her grandchildren, Ashley, Payton, Ava, Jack, Ben, and Jason. Visitation, Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 beginning at 2PM followed by the funeral service at 3 PM at Milward-Man O’ War, 1509 Trent Blvd. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials may be made to: http://act.alz.org/goto/BettyBumgarner

Betty was like a second mother to me for all those wonderful years growing up on Sideburn Rd. next to the Bumgarners. I am so fortunate to have all those wonderful memories that I will treasure forever. xo

Jim,
Thank you for calling me this morning and letting me know. Even though you had moved away a few years ago, I thought of you often. As I said, I was just wondering on Sunday how Betty was doing. Sending our deepest sympathy to you and Tiffany, Jill, Brian and all the family. We will be thinking of you.
Love,
Duane and Ann Riege

We met Jim and Betty on our first camping trip to Florida in 2009. They became fast friends, talking about the area, our families, and fun times around the campfire. We were from Kentucky and that qualified us as family as far as Betty was concerned. She loved the Bluegrass state! We have missed them the last couple of years as well as the visits with Peyton & Ashley. Betty has remained in our thoughts and prayers. We will miss her laughter.

I'm sure the reason you were called first out of our group of four, you were needed to plan our next reunion. You wrote some 54 years ago to never forget the good times we had and Betty I never forgot.

Betty's passing has left an empty place in our lives, but she will always live in our hearts. Her smile, her laugh, her sense of humor, her love for her family will never be forgotten. The angels smiled when they saw her walk into heaven.

Mom, I'm so proud to call you Mom. You were my biggest fan and my fiercest supporter. You were a wonderful role model and I strive to be the person and mother that you were. I will miss you forever. You led an admirable fight against this horrible disease. You are beautiful and I Love You!!

I will miss all the things that made you Betty - your smile, laugh, fabulous desserts, awesome spaghetti, sling back shoes, jewelry, purses, your love to read, country music... But above all, your kindness and generosity. From the start, you always made me feel like one of the family. You are forever in our hearts...

My condolences to Betty's family. She was obviously a loved and loving person. My father passed away two years ago this month from Alzheimer's. It's a devastating disease. The Alzheimer's Association is a great organization. Love to you all....Sue (Patty's friend in NC)

She was the best sister a girl could have! She taught me how to dance, while watching American Bandstand, taught me how to wear make up and to paint my nails. And over the years she has shared her recipes, sent me perfume, saved magazines for me and just showed me each and every day how much she loved me. When I kissed her goodbye yesterday, I told her "I have loved you since the day I was born and I will love you until the day I die".

Mom, you were fearless in your fight, and one of the greatest women I have known. I lost a mother, but heaven gained an angel. I love and miss you.
