is fundraising to honor:
all those facing Alzheimer's
supporting the fight to end Alzheimer's
Recently my family was gifted with a wonderful gift. The gift spurred my desire to pay it forward so I am asking for assistance in making a difference for those suffering from Alzheimer’s.
A little background, in 2013 my mother was diagnosed with moderate cognitive impairment, which has now been referred to as Alzheimer’s. At the time I thought we would have many more years before we would feel the full impact of this terminal disease, but I was wrong. In Jan 2018 I had to make the difficult decision to move my mother to a memory unit. I tried hard to care for her at home but her condition was changing rapidly and I could not continue to be a full time care giver, I was devastated. I went through a year of grief and anger and feeling all alone. I was watching the woman that I called my best friend leave me each day, and a part of me died too.
A few months ago, my husband’s company (GE) offered their employees a conference day where they could learn more about the disease and support families dealing with the devastation of living with the reality of Alzheimer’s. At the end of the conference I felt peace and comfort by the support. As if it couldn’t get any better, our family was gifted with a companion pet. If you have not had the privilege of seeing one of these electronic pets, well you will be in for a treat when you do. The day we took the pet to my mom was the best day ever! Not only did it provide her with peace and something to love but the residents all lit up with excitement and there was an atmosphere of joy. My mom’s companion pet is called Rover and he goes wherever she goes. I would like to gift the 15 residents at Woodridge Memory Unit with their own pets and batteries (15 pets total). I will donate any money beyond those purchases to the Alzheimer foundation to further assist families suffering with this disease. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s but I would like to be a part of making their last days something to remember. Thank you in advance for your support..
