I love my grandma, I really do. There's something special about an unconditional love for a grandparent. When I visited the Philippines the summer of 2017, I got to see my grandma, or "Lola," (the Filipino term for grandmother) for the first time in 6 years. Not only has it been the longest I've gone without seeing her, but it was the first time I witnessed her presence while suffering from dementia.
To my Lola, everybody in her eyes were strangers. For the three weeks that my family and I were there, she was probably thinking "What are all of these people doing in my house? They should be eating!" You would think as someone who has no recollection of their thoughts and who anybody is, they would be frustrated all of the time. But my Lola was the most peaceful and calm human being who greeted anyone with a smile every time they said "Hi Lola!" to her.
Because of Lola, I've decided to participate in the 2018 United Airlines Half-Marathon in NYC in March on behalf of the Alzheimer's Association. The Association is committed to accelerating the global progress of new treatments, preventions and ultimately, a cure.
Running in races, no matter the length, requires mental toughness. My Lola inspires me to run this half-marathon because of the mental toughness she manages to have day by day while suffering from this incurable disease. Not being able to see her whenever I can because she still lives in the Philippines is tough, but the idea that she goes through this terrible disease everyday and that I'm unable to take care of her makes it even more difficult.
Together, we can show those facing Alzheimer's disease that they are not alone. Please make a donation today to help the Alzheimer's Association support all those facing the disease. Every donation is greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!
