Fundraising Honor Roll

When Vincent and Tiana Haile moved from Wisconsin to Missouri in 1998, they brought suitcases, boxes, their two-year-old son, and their Uncle Elijah.  Uncle Elijah was diagnosed with cancer and dementia the same week that Vince was offered a new job in Missouri.  He was elderly and lived alone, so they invited him to move in with them.  He went into remission for about a year and lived for nearly two years after his double diagnosis.  Uncle Elijah was smart, funny, and good company in a new city that they were all just starting to explore and become familiar.  He played basketball with their son and went on a short road trip to visit family.

When the cancer returned, Uncle Elijah knew that it was robbing him of his body, but he had no idea that Alzheimer’s was stealing his memories. He forgot the new people and places they discovered.  He forgot that water came from the kitchen sink and not the oven.  Even though he forgot most of their names, he could tell them the same story over and over again.

Vincent & Tiana were given a glimpse as to what it’s like to live with Alzheimer’s.  They also have a number of family members and family friends who currently have, or have passed away as a direct result of Alzheimer’s disease.  This disease, like cancer must be stopped and the only way to find a cure is through research.  This is why they are proud to support the Memory Ball.

Tiana works as the Community Engagement Coordinator for Frederick County Public Schools.  She enjoys dancing, hula hooping and volunteering at church and in the community.  Vince works in supply chain for Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Mission Systems sector based in the Baltimore area.
