"Let me tell you a little secret..."
My mom loved gardening, playing Bridge, watching birds and butterflies, had a talent for interior decorating and enjoyed socializing with family and friends. She loved singing in church and dining out with my dad. She can't do any of that now. She can't even remember any of that now. She can't talk with us, can't share 40 years of memories with my dad. When she smiles, we hope it's recognition. When she moves her lips to try to speak - we imagine we hear her voice telling us she loves us.
Too many families share my story - and so many more will. 1 in 6 Baby Boomers will be afflicted with this unrelenting disease. We must do whatever we can to help raise awareness of the preventative measures that we can all take against this disease. Fundraising efforts are critical in the support of the growing need for research and development in finding a cure, advancement in medications, health care costs and support for families of patients. In a time when deaths caused by breast cancer and stroke are declining, the number of dementia-related deaths is climbing. Much more is needed to be done.
We spend our lives taking photos and making videos of special moments in our lives that we want to remember. We want to share these memories with our children and grandchildren some day. My mom can't share memories with us. Many of us will not be able to because of Alzheimer's. But I believe that with all of us working together, the future for the coming generations will be filled with memories that will literally last a lifetime.
