Together We Can Beat the Unbeatable

My sister, Nel, lost her long, brutal battle with Alzheimer's on Monday, March 28th, 2011. I closed her eyes and whispered in her ear that she wouldn't have to fight anymore ... that she would, at last, find peace.

I am not going to write Nel's story, only the beginning and the end.

I am asking you to help me with the middle.

Please share your Nel stories on this site by adding to the guestbook.

Share your personal stories about the sixth leading cause of death in the United States ... whether it's yours, a family member's or a friend's.

The end of my story is that together, we can honor Nel and everyone who has encountered the tragic consequences of this hideous disease. Together we can find the cause, the cure and take Alzheimer's off our minds forever. Together we can beat the unbeatable.

Your donations, no matter the amount, could add up to this happy ending.

And it will be our story ... together.

Tom

Richmond Times Dispatch Obituary

Neville Elizabeth Laughon, born in Richmond, May 10, 1946 passed away on March 28, 2011. She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Fred Thomas Laughon, Jr. She is survived by her loving mother and best friend, Helen Martin Laughon of Richmond; her brother, Fred Thomas Laughon III and his wife Melissa Anne Laughon; her two beloved nieces, Tovi Laughon Heffron and husband Christopher Keys Heffron and Lissi Laughon Rabon and husband Austin Tyler Rabon; three great-nephews, Thomas Keys Heffron, Patrick Christopher Heffron and Fisher Martin Heffron and three great-nieces, Livi Neville Heffron, Mackenzie Tyler Rabon and Tyli Belle Rabon.

As a pastor’s daughter, Nel grew up and was active in the communities of Norfolk, VA, Orangeburg, SC and Gainesville, FL and graduated from the University of Florida. She served as Treasurer and President of the Chi Omega sorority, Editor of The Seminole and one of the founders of Savant, a women’s leadership honorary organization.

She was an accomplished silhouette artist, collector and historian of the craft. The H&N Silhouette studio was located behind “Cheswick”, the 18th Century home Nel restored with her parents. From 1968 to the early 2000s, Nel worked with her mother and traveled more than 30,000 miles a year to museums and historical sites to cut the silhouettes of presidents, kings, astronauts, actors, bishops, ambassadors, diplomats and even the legendary racehorse, Secretariat.

She lectured on the history of silhouettes in the United States and England and co-authored a book on silhouetting, August Edouart: A Quaker Album. Nel was an instrumental part of her father’s woodworking business in which they reproduced 18th and 19th century salesman's sample furniture and wooden dolls. Their reproductions were sold in Williamsburg as well as to doll collectors all over the world.

Nel was a member of the Junior League of Richmond and many historical organizations. Her creative, enthusiastic leadership inspired and touched so many.

Nel’s family extends their appreciation for the wonderful care provided at home and at Hospice of Virginia. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 2 at 2:00 at Bethel Baptist Church, 1100 Huguenot Springs Rd, Midlothian, Virginia.

Nel was kind enough to go out with me a few times back when we were UF students. She was always nice and she was a boat-load of fun to be with! I was too broke and too often behind in my studies, so I did not even try to get a lot of dates in those days, so we did not go out all that many times, and there was no romance involved, but I always liked her very much. I eventually married a friend of hers, and we visited at Cheswick for a few days at one point. It was good to see Dr. & Mrs. Laughon, as well as Nel. They Did our family silhouette and took us to Williamsburg to see Dr. Laughon's replicas of the colonial doll furniture at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum there, among other things. It was a real treat to see them all and hear about their adventures and all the people Nel and Helen had done silhouettes of. My ex-wife had gone with them years before that to a mall in Jacksonville to do sihouettes of babies. that was before they got into the business so much. I learned about Nel's illness and passing quite a bit after the fact. I just began wondering whatever happened to some people I used to know, so I googled them and Nel's obituary came up. I was very sorry to learn her fate, because she was always so full of life and brightened every room she entered. She was a real Laughon!

I fell in love with Nel in Gainesville as we were in the same class in school. Even though we spent much time together over a year or so, I never really knew if she returned my feelings. Young love lasts in memory, though. It is with much joy that I have read about her life and her contributions to her fellow man. It is with sadness that I read about her early death. All those things mentioned in the other notes in this guest book about the kind of person she was, are true. My best to her family and may she be with us always.

I spent many a summer afternoon with Gramma and Nel in the old station wagon riding around, going to the pool or lunch or just running errands. We drank Big Gulps together and if the machine was broken at the 7-11 she would fix it. She treated me as if I were her own and I loved her dearly. My grandma and all 4 of her sisters died of Alzheimer's disease and I know the devastation it can bring. I will remember Nel as spry and quick witted and always ready with a kind word. She will be missed. Peace and love, Brooke

I first met and knew Nel as Tom's little sister when i enrolled in the University of Florida. As I relfect back she was the, and for her life as I knew her, remained Helen's alter ego. Possessed of a warm, caring and giving spirit, she personified the idea embodied in the "I'm Third" creedo. God first, family second and others third. She thought only of herself after all the above had been served. I only recall her being slightly sad once, but that was while she was in high school. Clearly she brought a light and sense of hope to all she touched. She cut the silouettes of my four boys that became and remains a treasured memory of there young years and they were made in to gold charms that Mary Ruth still has. We never fully understand God's timing in our lives, but Nel was called home way to early for our part and she will be missed. She was one of those people that you could not see for years and then once contact is made, you are back up to speed as if time had stood still. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Laughon family.

For us Nel was a big smile and with a big Gulp from Seven eleven, always ready to help out during our visitings in Richmond. One of biggest moments in life was our wedding and the party who Nel, Helen and Fred had for family and friends. So our thoughts are with Nel?s family. Love Kenneth, Jane, Mikael and Nicole. RIP

I was the "other aunt" to our wonderful
two nieces, Tovi and Lissi. Nel and I alway's teased each other about who was the better aunt. We could never agree of course.
We were family for a long time, lost contact but she always had a very special place in my heart. My three sibling's, our families and I will miss her dearly.
Rest in peace Nel
