Our Team Story

Please consider joining me and the authors of Not a Pipe Publishing in Writing Against the Darkness. As part of the Alzheimer's Association's #TheLongestDay event, we'll be writing from dawn until dusk on the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, June 21st. If you are a writer and would like to join us, please let me know and I'll send you an invite. Please consider donating!

I'm doing what I love to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. My grandparents, Don and Jean Warner, were afflicted with Alzheimer's/dementia. I’m participating in The Longest Day, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association. Today, over 35 million people across the world are living with Alzheimer's, including more than 5 million Americans. In the U.S. alone, more than 15 million caregivers generously dedicate themselves to those with Alzheimer's and dementia. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.

Together, we can show those facing Alzheimer's disease that they are not alone. Please make a donation today to help the Alzheimer's Association support all those facing the disease, and help the writers from Not a Pipe Publishing and our writer peers write against the darkness. Thank you!

Participating Online

This is a great way to raise money to help fight Alzheimer's disease while also doing what you love. Here are your action steps:

1. Join our team by going to bit.ly/AgainstDark (cap sensitive) and clicking on the "Join Our Team" button.

2. When you join the team (no cost) you have the option to order a shirt (cotton for $5, performance material for $10). These are great for the selfies. June 5 is the last day you're able to order the shirt and receive it in time for The Longest Day. You are still able to order the shirt after that, and it may arrive in time, but it's not guaranteed. Otherwise, any purple attire is highly encouraged, as it's our official color.

3. Once you're all signed up, go to your individual page and click to share it to Facebook and/or Twitter. This is how you'll ask for donations so they will be credited to you and the team. Do this as often as you are comfortable with, but be sure to post about it at least once.

4. Invite other writers to join. Know someone who writes? Poets, screenwriters, memoirists, novelists ... All writers are welcome!

5.When we get near the longest day (June 21st), post again and remind people to support our team.

6. Decide when you'll write. It does NOT have to be from dawn till dusk on The Longest Day. That's when your posts about it will get the most attention, but if you have a work conflict, you can write on Thursday or Saturday or Sunday and that would be just fine. 

7. As you write, take pictures of yourself and share them to social media to remind folks what you are doing and to ask them to donate. 

8. When you post, use the hashtags #TheLongestDay or #ENDALZ along with #WritingAgainstDarkness so we can see one another's posts and share them out. 

8. Have fun! Don't hurt yourself. Take breaks. Write well. 

9. Continue posting about it and asking for donations after the event itself using the pictures. If you or anyone you know has a connection to Alzheimer's or other dementia, please spread the word about The Alzheimer's Association's 24/7 Helpline 800-272-3900 and the plethora of programs and services offered offer at no cost around the state and around the country. Any question, any time of day, they have resources!

10. Come back and do this again next year!


Participating In Person

1. 1-5 above

2. Make sure you let me know you'd like to come to the beach house as soon as possible. Space IS limited. I'll send you the address. (I will not post it publicly.)

3. Communicate with me about what you should bring. We'll need snacks, party supplies, etc. It will only cost $10 per person per night!

4. On Thursday, the 20th of June, drive to Wendy's house in Lincoln City anytime after noon. We'll enjoy each other's company that evening. (That sounded much sexier than I intended. I mean drinks and good conversation and lots of laughter, you pervs!)

5. On the morning of June 21st, we'll get up EARLY, take our first round of selfies, do our posting, and then, come dawn (4:52 am!), we'll get to work.

6. We will take scheduled breaks throughout the day to post more selfies, eat, etc. A walk down to the beach to do more writing there would make for good pictures and a couple good breaks in transit.

7. We'll finish at dusk (9:44pm!), do some high-five-ing, and crash.

8. The next morning, we clean up so Wendy's house is in even better shape than when we arrived, and then we go home. 

9.
