#ENDALZ. That’s our goal and I can’t wait for that day. The day where we don’t have to watch loved ones battle the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s. Where we don’t have to watch them struggle to do things that were once so easy. Where we don’t have to watch them lose their memory and their personality change.
At each Walk to End Alzheimer’s, participants carry flowers. Each color signifies a different association to Alzheimer’s. Purple means you’ve lost someone to the disease. Orange shows support for the cause and a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s. Blue indicates that the carrier has Alzheimer’s. Yellow is for those who care for or support someone with Alzheimer’s. One day, there will be a white flower. Those who carry this flower will be Alzheimer’s survivors. Yes, survivors.
Take a look at these statistics:
•More people die from Alzheimer’s than from breast cancer and prostate cancer combined
•Between 2000 and 2019, deaths from heart disease have decreased 7.3%. Deaths from Alzheimer’s have increased 145%
•More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s
•1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
Those numbers scare me.
This is the disease that took my mom from us. It slowly changed the woman who taught me to bake and help others. The woman who had a smile that would light up a room. Alzheimer’s chipped away at her little by little. She was no longer confident in the kitchen. She could no longer volunteer, a role she loved so much. She no longer remembered dates that were once so important to her. She no longer could carry on a conversation. She could no longer take care of herself. She no longer knew who so many family and friends were.
My mom is the reason I continue to fight to #ENDALZ. Please consider joining me in this fight, whether through a donation to my walk page, by joining my team or both.
