My mom was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 65 and lived with this terrible disease for over 9 years. The biggest struggle was that she never admitted it to others, including our family. This made it hard to get the help she needed because she was even working hard to hide it from doctors. When we finally got them to listen and convince her, she was put on medication that slowed the process but didn’t reverse any of the damage already done. We had to make the hard decision to move her to memory care for her last year. Ultimately, she stopped eating due to the disease and that is what eventually ended her life. We were lucky. Most families watch their loved ones have no activity or communication for years. This is why we walk! This is why we raise funds to help find a cure. Yes, there is a new medicine that was just approved by FDA that can help slow down the effects, but we need a cure. We need our children and grandchildren to know that it’s ok to get the help needed when they notice a change and have hope that they can fight this disease and beat it. We need business and individual partners to bring awareness to this community by putting together a team. This helps us reach others to raise the funds needed to keep going with the great research they are doing. Whether you have 2 or 30 walkers, it all makes a difference. This is a great day to come together and support those that have cared for, lived with or are living with Alzheimer’s. Thank you for any support you can offer!
