My mom's Alzheimer's journey lasted until she passed in March of 2022, and she loved to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's. By walking and donating money, she felt like she was doing something to end what she once called "this miserable disease." Our family walked with her at the Walk to End Alzheimer's in Queensbury, New York, and Reston, Virginia
After she passed, my sister Tracy created the Amy's Army team which continued my mom's tradition of participating in both of these walks. Since she passed, the Amy's Army team raised nearly $50,000, but we are not done. My sister has created Amy's Army shirts, hats, and bags that feature purple camo, and which often get rave reviews. I wrote a book about my experience advocating and caring for my mom entitled, "I'm Not Ready for This." All of the proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to the Amy's Army team.
As we look forward to the Walk to End Alzheimer's in 2024, I decided to expand Amy's Army by organizing an event exclusively for those named Amy, Aime, Aimee, Amee, Aimie, or Amie. The Amy Meet-Up will be on Wednesday, April 10th, from 4:45 to 6 p.m. at the Saratoga Arms Hotel. To register, donate at least $25 to to our Walk Team and we will see you on April 10th as your donation serves as registration to attend. Any questions, please contact me at toddlshimkus@gmail.com.
