Have you ever had to watch somebody’s life disappear before your eyes. That’s what my family has done. Everyday. For years. Before I was born my Grandma Bernice went through dementia, I hear stories about that time from my dad. She passed before I was born. On the other hand, I had a front row seat to watching my Grandma Barbara go through dementia before passing this last Easter morning. I watched her forget where we ate earlier in the day, watched her forget she’s in her house, I watched her forget who I was over the course of an afternoon. I watched my mother fight to care for her through the very end, every hospital trip, and every new memory care. Alzheimer’s is a common form of dementia, and according to the Alzheimer’s Society, if single-gene dementia is present in a parent, there is a one in two chance their child inherits it. What’s the chance for my parents? What’s the chance for me?
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, my sorority, Sigma Kappa, is raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research that benefits current and future patients.
Families, my family, facing or recovering from the effects Alzheimer’s and all other kinds of dementia need help now more than ever — and with you, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
