When I was once a little girl, my Grandmother was my rock. She taught me how to be the person I am today and instilled in me the values I hold most dear. As a first generation Mexican American, life was filled with challenges, both for myself and mi Abuela ( my Grandmother ). When my Grandmother was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's, our family had no concept of the gravity of this disease. We took care of Socorro, once diagnosed with Alzheimers for over 22 years and gave her the best possible end of life, while coping with the reality of this unique sickness. I believe that my family’s unconditional love and care is what kept my grandmother with us for so many years living with Alzheimer's disease, unfortunately not all of us are blessed with such wonderful support, which is why I believe in the importance of our organization.
When my grandmother was in the final stages of Alzheimers taking her from us, I slept by her side in the hospital every night until her passing. We all learned in due time, just how devastating and complex this disease can be and I wish I had known about the Alzheimer's Association during our struggle.
It is with great honor that I continue to support the Alzheimer's organization. My main goal working as a volunteer is to spread the word to the LatinX community that there are resources available when hope is dwindling. We must continue to fight for a cure to end Alzheimers.
Sincerely,
Isabel Marschak Robles
