I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®.
I am Catherine Dooley a sophomore at Edison Prep. Currently, my grandpa, David Lawson just passed away with Alzheimer's disease. For me this disease has been in my life since I can remember. My grandpa was diagnosed when I was about seven years old. It is the most devastating thing that I have had to face. The disease has been not only been a devastation, but it has opened my eyes tremendously.
From the beginning of this disease, seeing it impact my family, I realized I needed to help. That grew my fascination for neuroscience. It is a dream of mine to go to Tulsa University for my basic classes then transfer to Notre Dame or the University of Columbia for Neuroscience and genetics to help find a cure for Alzheimer's!
The Tulsa University family has tramendously helped my family. Their love and support will never be fully communicated from me. The smiles and comfort they provided for grandpa is priceless. The comfort of knowing the individual is aware that they are safe and they are in a calm environment is unexplainable! The thought that they are aware they are alright and they are content with where they are and who they are with is a refreshing and relieving feeling.
Having this disease impact my life daily had been very emotional. Some days have been spent home from school because the day before I saw new changes in my grandpa and it was hard to mentally cope with the thoughts that I was losing the smartest, toughest, and happiest role model. Then those characteristics transferred to my Grandma and my mother as I saw how amazingly tough they have been while caregiving for my grandpa. I’m often scared now to not tell our story. When before often times I just stayed quiet because I felt as if no one else would understand, that was until my family found the Alzheimer’s Association. You never know the true impact of the disease until you experience it first hand. Every step we take we can achieve a step closer in research.
I would highly appreciate if you download the app “charity miles”. Use Alzheimer’s Association as the charity of choice please! Then go to the menu and use #walkieposse as your team of choice! Every mile you walk, run, or bike the sponsor of the day will donate $.25 to the Association!!! Every penny counts!
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
