One of the hardest things about life is when you become the sole keeper of those precious memories because Alzheimer's or dementia has stolen the memories from your loved one. I grew up listening to my parents and grandparents reliving memories of times before I was born. Some of my favorite stories are about trips they took - stories my parents still tell me, but now they are the sole keepers of those first-hand memories because they have been stolen from my grandparents by dementia.
I think about the trips I've taken with my parents and brother- and with my husband and daughter and I fear the possibility that someday one of us might not remember. It's because of this that I am Walking (and raising money) to End Alzheimer's. Medical research makes a difference - I've seen it first hand when medical research saved my husband and mom when they had cancer and I have faith that the medical research happening today will preserve the memories of our loved ones in the future. The first survivor of Alzheimer's will go down in history - a memory they will be able to share with their friends and family.
