My family, Team True Love Ways, will be participating in the 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer's in Atlanta, GA on Saturday, October 13, 2018 in honor of my mom who has Frontotemporal Dementia. We participate in this walk to raise funds for research, care and support for families just like ours and the millions unknowingly coming after us.
My mom was diagnosed with FTD in the Fall of 2013, and is currently in the early late-stage of the disease. After much deliberation, we moved mom to a memory care facility in October 2017 and have since moved her to a nursing home dedicated to the care of those with dementia. She is wheelchair-bound now and minimally communicative, but shares a smile at the sight of my dad who visits daily for hours each time. Though she is still living, I miss my mom terribly.
The Alzheimer's Association has provided invaluable resources and support for our family as we face each phase of this incurable disease. For our family specifically, the Alzheimer's Association has provided caregiver education, what-to-expect books, next stage care counsel and options, legal contacts, out of home care options, and an always warm, empathetic approach to all of our questions and needs. More broadly, the Alzheimer's Association equips and promotes advocacy about this deadly disease resulting in increased government funding for research. There is only 1 disease in the top 10 leading causes of deaths in the US that cannot be prevented, slowed or cured...Alzheimer's disease.
Today, 100% of those diagnosed with Alzheimer's will die from the disease. What we pray for is that one day other families won't have to face this same lengthy, dreadful decline. The rate of Alzheimer's diagnoses is on the rise...we need more funding for more research and better care options.
Please join us in support of the Alzheimer's Association by praying, walking and/or giving.
Our team, True Love Ways (which, by the way, was my parents' 'song' from their courtship over 50 years ago!), has committed to raise $6,000 and we are asking for your support!
Thank you for helping us advance Alzheimer's support, care and research!
