my best friend! She was the one person that I could call when anything happened..... good or bad, she knew what to say and how to talk me through it.
That all changed in 2012 when she was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimers disease at age 51! Over the past 5 years she has gone from a vibrant, fabulous and sharp woman to a helpless and scared victim of this horrible disease. My mission is to honor her and her life and to fight this disease that has taken hold of our family.
In addition to walking, I volunteer several hours a month to make the walk a true SUCCESS! I hope that my contribution and volunteer work can keep other families from losing their Mom too.
My family is LUCKY to have an amazing support system, but many victims of this disease do not have that luxury. Alzheimer's can often make you feel alone and afraid; which is how millions of caregivers feel on a daily basis. I am so thankful every day that my Dad has been able to step up and take on various titles: DAD, MR.MOM, CAREGIVER, PROVIDER, SUPPORT SYSTEM. He has truly been the glue that holds us all together in this family nightmare.
I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. This disease has NO CURE, there is NO KNOWN PREVENTION to ward off the disease, and there are no medications to SLOW DOWN the progression of the disease. Alzheimer's is also HIGHLY Hereditary, so if you know someone in your family had the disease, you are MORE LIKELY to get the disease yourself. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please join my team or make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
