Many of my fondest memories are of family gatherings at Mema's house. I remember cranking the handle to make homemade ice cream on the back porch, pancakes with homemade syrup, and playing with my cousins in the back yard. Mema passed away with dementia in 2014 and at that time she had 9 children, 27 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren. She will never know it, but Mema was and still is my greatest inspiration. She taught me, by example, the importance of family and forgiveness. She was also a great story teller with a witty sense of humor. I loved listening to her tell stories about how ornery my mom was as a child. As Mema’s dementia got worse, the stories changed from being about my mom to questions of where her mother was. She had no idea that her mother had passed decades ago. She had no idea that she was the head of a 100+ member family tree. She had no idea about the positive impact she made on the lives of so many.
I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
