I am walking for the many people that I know who are dealing or have dealt with this disease, not least of which are my grandparents. Three of the four of my grandparents had dementia of some variety prior to passing. I can remember being in high school and my grandfather not remembering why he'd driven the 1 mile to the local mini-mart--we'd come for bread. I can remember visiting with my grandmother when I was in college and a young professional and hearing her tell me all about myself, but not realizing that she was actually speaking to me. Finally, I remember helping my mother to cope with her mother as the disease robbed her of the ability to manage her appointments, her checkbook, and her life.
I have dedicated the better part of my life to helping other families to deal and cope with the disease through my professional work in the senior housing and healthcare industry. What I have learned is that it is never easy, but no one is alone in the endeavor, although it often feels like you are. The Alzheimer's Association helps with this in a variety of ways--support groups and local programs. I hope that my endeavors in fundraising will help all of us. Because whether you have been touched directly or not, your tax money is going to care for folks with this disease and the price tag is astronomical.
I appreciate your help in finding a treatment or cure and supporting my efforts to eradicate this disease.
Thank you for joining the movement! The end of Alzheimer's disease starts with you.
