2018 is another exciting year for the Westchester Walk to End Alzheimer's. We will again be at SUNY Purchase and the date is September 16, 2018. We have lots of room for parking and a great layout for all of the activities that will take place. I am honored to be working as the Volunteer Co-Chair for our 2018 Walk.
We need to continue to ramp up the search for a cure for Alzheimer's Disease. While significant progress is being made, the solution to this very serious quest continues to be elusive. We read regularly about many "almost there" answers, and new paths to another solution are always being discussed. But the reality is that much more research is needed, and thus more money needs to be raised to reach the goal of a cure by 2025.
Caring for those stricken with Alzheimer's has always been an important reason behind my involvement with the Association. I have witnessed various gatherings and events where I see how the Hudson Valley Chapter volunteers and staff make a REAL difference in the lives of those needing care and their caregivers. Our chapter is increasing the level of these activities which are so very important to those in need of our support, and as you might expect, funds are needed to continue these important efforts.
I continue to be personally involved in our committees that raise funds for and awareness about our missions. Why? Because for 10 years I watched my mother-in-law, Alice Sullivan, suffer with this hideous disease until she died from Alzheimer’s. My Mom ,Beatrice Klar, also suffered from dementia and I remember only too well the day I knew that she forgot who I was...long before I was ready to accept that reality.
By 2050, statistics tell us that 16 million people will be suffering from Alzheimer's. I want to do everything that I can to insure that my children and grand-children, and yours, will not have to deal with either caring for family members who have Alzheimer's or need to worry about not being treated with the cure for Alzheimer's. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this devastating disease. The Alzheimer's Association, which is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research, will use the funds we raise and these will go directly toward supporting their efforts.
Having attended many Alzheimer’s conferences, especially in Washington, DC, and listening to reports from scientists and leaders from the Alzheimer’s Association and the scientific community, I can see that there are very encouraging trial matches and results. Today, with the help of friends like you, significant progress has been made in the area of imaging, clinical trials and diagnosis, which we hope will lead to a cure in the near future. But much remains to be done, and your continued support is essential.
As co-chair of this 2018Westchester Walk to End Alzheimer's, I send out an especially strong appeal for your support. Create a team, join our SQAD team, come to the Walk and donate as much as you can. The end of Alzheimer’s starts here – with a gift from you. Thank you for your anticipated support.
