The Alzheimer's Walk for 2018
Sally and I are now in our 10th year of the balttle with dementia/Alzheimer's. The original diagnosis was in 2009 but the early signs were eveident prior to the diagnosis. In 2010 we joined a group of 12 couples in what was known as Learning Together. Of those 12, we have 2 survivors left with us today. Fortunately, Sally is still at home and we attribute much of this to staying active and continuing to lead a busy social life which has been good for both of us. Sally is in good shape physically and takes medicine for thyroid and several supplements. Sally's main concerns right now are lack of memory, focus and concentration. It is honestly quite difficult to carry on much of a conversation with her. Her latest MRI of the brain indicated that Atrophy has progressed from moderate to severe.
Unfortunately with Sally's situation, there are no meds available right now that will stop or slow the progress of Alzheimer's. However, there are 126 drugs in clinical development/trials right now and every single one represents HOPE. That's the good news since there has not been a new Alzheimer's drug on the market for over 10 years now. In addition, our Federal Government has added over 400 million dollars in each of the last four years for research to find a cure for this terrible disease which is a big drain on Medicare and Medicaid. In addition the majority of the money raised from the ALZHEIMER'S WALK 2018 IS USED FOR FUNDING FOR RESEARCH TO FIND A CURE.
If any of the drug trials work, it will be a few years before they become available to the public and they won't be much help to Sally BUT it will be great news to our daughters and six grandkids and the rest of the world. Please consider helping us out with a contribution to this wonderful cause. We would appreciate it a bunch!
Go to the Alzheimer's Association web page at alz.org/indiana. Click on the Fort Wayne Walk, then type in The Graduate Group, click on my name and make your contribution. If you would like to send a check - make it out to the Alzheimer's Assoc. and send it to me at 9531 Windmill Court, Fort Wayne, IN, 46804. Thanks Much! My goal is $2500. Our team has won First Place the last three years in our category and raised right at $50,000.
Thanks so much for your help,
Ed & Sally Sanders
