I work at Suffield by the River ~ A Senior Residential Community, not a day goes by that we do not interact on some level with a person who is affected by Alzheimer's disease. Whether it is a resident with an Alzheimer's diagnosis, a family member or friend struggling to cope with a loved one's progression with the disease, a spouse "covering" for a beloved's loss of cognitive functioning, or a nurse, CNA, housekeeper, recreation coordinator, dining room server or any staff member that frequently reassures a resident that they are safe.
Holding their hand, carefully choosing words when answering a question for someone with dementia so as not to correct, worry, or upset the person, all while caring for that resident's daily needs maybe skipping a lunch break or holding off on a bathroom break because someone who is confused, scared or lost needs us more! Caring for people with Alzheimer's is rewarding, challenging, full of laughter, spattered with tears, silly, filled with heartache, meaningful, dappled with frustration (after all, we are human), sad, exhausting and gratifying all rolled into one! Finding a cure for Alzheimer's is critical. I hope, I believe, that together we can!
I fight for all of our friends and family at Suffield by the River ... my extended family! Come, join the fight!
Thank you for helping us advance Alzheimer's support, care and research!
