This Alzheimer's Walk is a huge priority for me. I have seen Alzheimer's destroy the once-brilliant minds of people who made substantive contributions in their fields, such that you can easily find their work with a simple online search. It breaks my heart to see someone who used to be sharp and engaging reduced to the capabilities of a child because of Alzheimer's. It break my heart to see the frustration of someone with Alzheimer's incapable of expressing the simplest thoughts, even while they still know once they had that capability. It breaks my heart to have someone tell me Alzheimer's cost them their best friend.
This is why I get very aggressive recruiting donations, and why we want others to join our team. The funds we raise go to research to find a cure for Alzheimer's and to provide activities and support to people who have the dementia and to their families. Please note that joining our team does not mean you are obliged to walk on October 13. Rather, think of that Saturday morning as a fringe benefit.
For if you do choose to walk with us, on October 13, expect to have a wonderful experience in Downtown San Jose with thousands of others. Expect to have an uplifting and energizing experience walking with all those other people united to bring an end to the scourge of Alzheimer's.
