Sara's Walk Donation Page
I'm leading the way to Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's(R). Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
I’m walking to honor my beloved Gpa, Dale Ewing, who fought this awful disease for years. I want to help others honor their loved ones and eradicate this terrible disease. Scientists believe the first survivor of ALZ is alive now, and I can’t wait to see a day where no one else has to suffer from this.
My dear Gpa was an amazing man, husband, father, and grandfather. He was a newspaper editor, a mayor, a school board member, an accountant, a military veteran. He was a jack of all trades but truly a master of all.
All I knew when I was a kid, though, was that he liked to teach me vocabulary words (“debonair” is still my jam). He would watch Bugs Bunny and Road Runner with me. He would help me learn to read. When we would play Moonlighting (my favorite show as a weird little kid), he had to teach me that appointments were made in AM and PM, even though I was certain it was AM and FM. He would often wonder aloud where my volume button was located.
So little of who he was had to do with Alzheimer’s because he led such a full and incredible life, but it is something that our family helped him try to be comforted through during his final months. We will carry his fight with us always. He would often forget words and who I was, especially at the end, but his spirit and heart remained the same until his final breath: good, honest, and kind. Alzheimer’s is a thief that I want to stop.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
