When Nani was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about five years before she passed, none of us knew exactly what was in store for us. Two years after her diagnosis, she was moved to Copper Creek Memory Care Facility in Chandler, AZ (from her home in NY - she had children and grandchildren in Phoenix as well). During the last three years of her life, we all watched as her memory weakened as well as her physical strength. This disease robs people not only of physical wellness as their brains deteriorate, but of the most important things in life to them - their memories and emotional ties to the things and people they love so dearly. We were fortunate enough to have kept a great deal of Nani's memory. She knew every single one of us until the end of her life. We know what a gift that was, as most people have had to watch their loved ones change into someone unrecognizable. We will always be grateful for the memories and love Nani was able to keep and for the time we had with her.
