In October 2016, we lost my Nani, Marie Elder, to Alzheimer's disease and the loss has been overwhelming for the entire family. Nani was a mother of six, a grandmother of ten, and a great-grandmother of two. Her entire life was devoted to caring for her big family, making us all feel loved every single day. Growing up, my grandparents played such a signification role in my life and I always looked up to Nani and wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I was lucky because I had a Nani who was also one of my best friends.
When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about five years before she passed, none of us knew exactly what was in store for us. Two years after her diagnosis, Nani was moved to Copper Creek Memory Care Facility in Chandler, AZ (from her home in NY). During the last three years of her life, we all watched as her memory weakened as well as her physical strength. This disease robs people not only of physical wellness as their brains deteriorate, but of the most important things in life to them - their memories and emotional ties to the things and people they love so dearly. We were fortunate enough to have kept a great deal of Nani's memory. She knew every single one of us until the end of her life. We know what a gift that was, as most people have had to watch their loved ones change into someone unrecognizable. We will always be grateful for the memories and love Nani was able to keep and for the time we had with her.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease. Nani fought this disease with everything she had until the very end, and we will keep her strong spirit alive and continue to fight for her.
